Carb adjustment help please!!!!!!
Help please, I just rejeted my carb and put on a ness big sucker stage II.
My bike is an 2002 883, I put in an 45 slow jet and a 165 main jet. I also did Gronk’s muffler mod.
After putting everything back together, I turned the mixture screw in all the way and then backed it out two full turns.
Turned the speed screw in two turns then turned in the mixture screw till it seated, backed off the speed screw till the bike shut down.
Backed the mixer screw out two turns restarted the bike, turned the mixture screw out seven turns, and the idle picked-up but never stumbled.
I am now getting a loud pop thru the carb and WOT is not at all responsive. The bike falls off to nothing at WOT, dose great at ½ to ¾ in 4th and 5th. and has great pull at WOT through 1st. 2nd. And 3rd.
Any ideas?

RE: Carb adjustment help please!!!!!!
I sprayed carb cleaner around the ruber intake gasket, the bike quit.
I took the carb back off and used some dish washing liqued on the gasket put it back on and set the mixture screw at 2.5 turns.
Rode about 10 miles and only had 2 carb farts, going to try and retune friday when I get home from work.
Top end still not great at WOT.

Ok just got the bike back together and went for a 4 mile ride. The carb farts seem to be gone, it did it one time backing out of the building and I haven't been able to get it to pop again.
Hole shot rev limiter kicks in at 45mph in 1st. and then around 65mph in 2nd.
When I get on the throttle in 4th. and 5th. To pickup speed it is a little sluggish, not real bad though.
I changed my 45 slow to a 48, went back to the 160 from 165 on the main.
My needle is an NOKK.
My breather is a ness big sucker stage II, stock pipes with the baffles now removed.
Dose this sound right, do I need to change anything?
Any opinions, yes I know about opinions but I’m new to wrenching on bikes and would like some input.
Thanks Jeff.

Your main jet just allows a maximum amount of fuel to the needle. You can make the whole band richer buy adding thin washers to the needle below the clip, thus raising the needle. If the popping was on deceleration, the low end (pilot) jet fixes that along with the low end mixture screw.
If you have areas in the band that are weak, you can make fine adjustments to the needle by using a fine file. Just file that portion flat, it will not hurt. For example, if the bottom and mid are good, but the top end is lean, file off a little on the bottom 0.5 inch of the needle.
Get a spare needle before making adjustments, just in case you mess it up.
The alternative is to find needles that have different shapes for different applications.
