HD Bulletin M-1162 question

RE: HD Bulletin M-1162 question
I contacted my dealer and he hadn't heard anything about the service bulletin. Still waiting for a call back if he has found anything on it. As far as the hiccup thing goes, he stated that the reason for this is because it is set to run lean from the factory to meet emission requirements. He also said they just had a sportster in there and they re-jetted the carburetor and added a filter kit for about $250 parts and labor. The customer who had this done said it fixed the hiccup problem. Hopefully I can have the service bulletin done to see if it fixes the hiccup first and save the $250.

RE: HD Bulletin M-1162 question
This seems very odd to me. Running lean would not cause the pop through the carb, which is what is happening when it "hiccups". The timing at low rpm will ignite the fuel slightly before the intake valve closes. It will usually only happen under load at low RPM, and most likely at warm up. Air to fuel mixture should not effect it.

RE: HD Bulletin M-1162 question
Yes I have heard of the bulletin as a matter of fact I read this post yesterday and called Laughermans in York Pa and they informed me that yes indeed they neeed to download new information to the ecm for 2004 Sporsters. I ran a diagnostic check on my bike and was getting a code for the crank position sensor having intermittent problems . FYI I have been having a terrible popping occasionally warm or cold where it actually shoots gas all over the pipes and engine case and it has been making me crazy. I have stage one mods done using all screaming eagle pipes and air cleaner. I was thinking if the crank position sensor is screwing up it could be a timing related backfire who knows . I cleared the codes and will ride it over the weekend and then run the diagnostic test again and see if the code reappears . If it does i will make an appointment to take it in . It should be covered by the warranty so they say . He said he would update the ECM and replace the crank position sensor after they see the code in there . this has been very frustrating to say the least because it is an intermittent problem . It also seems to running rich in my opinion but after long ride plugs say differently . I am very confused so I guess it is time to take it to the so called experts right .

RE: HD Bulletin M-1162 question
Sure wish I'd found this earlier, sounded like some stenographer had recorded my life except they left out the part about being stranded 50miles from home, at night, on Sunday, Laborday weekend. Running lean is what they told me, running rich is what I was saying, after changing the crank sensor, they tell me that would have given me a running rich situation. I said no S%$T! - 2 set of plugs/ tank of gas wasn't normal?
