I like the combination of both.........mid controls with highway pegs up front. I have to say I like the look of just forward controls better. But for riding purposes, mids offer a better riding position in the twisties, and easier to stand up on them a little if you need to run over a good bump in the road, and they're a little more comfortable in stop and go city traffic. But having the highway pegs also gives me the option to stretch out while cruising.

It probably depends on just how "vertically challenged" you are. On the 04 and later Sporties the "forwards" are a couple of inches closer in than they were on the 03 and earlier bikes. I'm 6'2" with a 32' inseam, and have forward controls. A quick look at the pic below should tell you just how jammed up I'd be with mids.

I have forward controls on my Dyna. They allow me to streach out a bit when riding. I also have a Harley motor guard with riding pegs. I have to pay attention when going from the forward controls to the motor guard pegs and vise/versa. I believe it's what you get use to.

forward controls. Too tall for mids.
My forwards soon to be extended about 6 inches.

+1 I've been riding with mids on everything I own for over 35 years. Could be just habit maybe.

Give some thought to what type of bars you want to have, if your going drags stick with the mids, if your going with apes then forwards would be better.

I swtiched to forwards to be a little more comfortable on the bike. The mids were cramping me a bit. Felt like I was back on my burner. I like the feel and look of the forwards, but sometimes, especially in the twisties, boy do I miss my mids!

It has nothing to do with how "verically" chaleneged you are.

It's a question of whether you want to sit on the motorcycle or ride it, and that's simple, un-arguable, mechanics.

Personally, I think forward controls on sportsters, or any bike that claims to be half-way sporty, is stupid. Mids all the way.

But I also hate it when people try and make their sportster into mini-big-twins. Just get a big-twin.

Mids are superior in every way, and with high-way pegs matched, there is zero downside to keeping them.
