Default Painting the motor

Ok I have seen some paint the motor black in the N. Some have powdercoated the side cases only to have to rattlecan the rest. I am about to try mine.
I want to know what type, color and brand of paint you used and how it is working. If it flakes, scratches or anything you can think of. Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.
I live really close to work so I am writing this on lunch and will not be back until I get off at 5. thanks again

I used VHT on a buddies dyna. Just follow the directions on the can and you will be golden. The VHT is a little pricey at arount $12 a can but is rated at 2000 degrees and can be had at most any auto parts store. I didn't use any primer and just scuffed what I could with a scotch brite pad. That was over a year ago and it looks like it came from the MOCO that way.

just get it done right the first time.....it would suck to have to go back and pull parts to repaint. i say powdercoat them, for all the time and effort you're gonna spend doing it you can take it to an indy, have them strip it (or you can strip it and find a good powder guy) and put it back together. you might be glad you spent the extra $. just my 2 cents. either way, post pics midnight! can't wait to see how it turns out.

BMX I agree that powdercoating is the best way, BUT they would have to completly tear down the motor, bearings, pistons and tranny to powdercoat the thing right. Most indys will powdercoat the cases and rattlecan the block. This I have checked on. So I can rattlecan the whole thing and if the cases need to be redone I can sandblast them and powdercoat them.

Thanks ecaldwell, VHT? is that short for anything? I want to go flat black. $12 a can when it will only take 2 cans at the most is pretty cheap if you ask me lol thanks!

lol ok thanks, I think I had a blond moment there. Thought VHT was short for a brand name. I have seen some VHT for outdoor bbq grills. That is a flat black also. Just want to make sure i get it right the first time. I did figure on using some type of engine paint, actually only needs to withstand up to about 400 degreese. I have seen some N's with a glossy black and I didnt like the look, I want it to look like the heads being flat black.

I will make sure to post pics. My derby cover is still at the painter's getting some aribrush on it, so it will be about 2 weeks. I am waiting for the cover to be done before I tear into it. I want to do all of it at once.

I never use cheap engine paint anymore I always use Thurmalox stove paint, it comes in many colors and the stuff works great. I've been painting engines and headers for 30 years and this is the best stuff I have ever used.
My current Sportster had the heads, jugs and chrome exhaust painted with this paint almost 4 years ago and it all still looks like it was just done.
You have top order it on line, just put in stove paint and the place that sells it pops up.
