RE: ? on oil for 1977 sportster
This is going to result in another chapter of the "Great Oil Debate".
The 1977 Sportster is an Ironhead engine. H-D specs call for a quality 20w-50 motorcycle oil.
There are lots of answers about which oil.
H-D would recommend their 20w-50 dino oil. H-D 20w-50 Syn3 would also be a good choice.
For a premium synthetic Amsoil MCV 20w-50 or Mobil V-Twin are good choices.
For a conventional dino oil Motul 3000 20w-50 or Valvoline 20w-50 motorcycle oil are good choices.
I choose to run Amsoil MCV 20w-50 in my '96 XL1200-C (21K miles) in both the engine and trans.
OBTW - I don't represent any company, I just ride a Harley.
A couple of recommendations. Run dino oil for the first 500 - 1000 miles on a new engine or after a rebuild (even if it's just the top end). Also, not all motor oils meet the spec for the trans, some of the additive packages don't "get along" with the clutch. So make sure that your choice meets the trans specs.
