Default 883 vs 1200

I just got my motorcycle endorsement yesterday, and I am looking to buy a new bike over the next month or so.

How much of a power difference is there from the 883 to the 1200? When I ride with other bikes, how far will I fall behind the other bikes- or will them make fun of my cute little under powered bike?

You need tp do some test rides, I had a xl883 for years and as far as keeping up there will be no issue, I raced a buddie off the line once, 05 xl883 vs 04 Road King and we were dead even, the 883 will do about 105mph stock and has good pick up, the 1200 is a little quicker and two up quite a bit quicker, both are good bikes.

On a long trip you will appreciate the 1200. Around town and short day trips ths 883 will do everything the big boys do and then some. Ride different ones and choose what fits you. And if someone has a problem with your sporty, politely tell them to go fornicate with themselves

the 1200 will run a little smoother at high RPM's (interstate trips) will run a little cooler too.

If can afford the difference get a 1200 .. if price is a factor grab an 883 and do a 1200 Big Bore later on ... The 1200 has the little extra oomphh that brings a smile over the 883

Decide what type of riding you are planning on doing. Like long trips or short hops. Go test ride different models....then get the biggest you can afford. Then enjoy the ride.

Default I keep up...

I have an XLH 883 and never have a problem keeping up with the group. Do what you can afford. Remember... after you get the bike you might need to customize it a bit so you get a comfortable ride. You might need a more comfy seat, forward controls or some saddle bags. Don't strap yourself to a payment that wont allow you to customize.

Depends on what they are riding. If your buddies have crotch rockets like some of mine there is no keeping up. I can get them off the line then they are gone. I have a 1200 and I love it. It does everything I need it to do. This is my first bike as well and has done me well.
