Default carb work on sportster cv carb.

This is the formula I have always used in adjusting my carbs on my sportsters.

S.E. II slip ons
K and N filter in a after market highflow filter box and crank breather reroute.
2 #4 brass washers under stock needle
Drill slide vacuum to 1/8"
Clip two coils off stock spring
45 low jet
180 high jet
adjust low mix accordingly.

Please let me know where im wrong. Im getting ready to help a buddy do this to his 05 XLC and want to know all of your oppinions before I crack his carb. I have a done this to my 05 xlc with one exception, im using a SE high flow needle instead of a needle shim.

Modifying the slide and spring throws off the balance of the carb. It is supposed to make the slide lift faster but it can lead to serious problems. The trade off is just not worth it to me. The "possibility" that it will improve throttle response does not outweigh the tuning issues. The carb relies on a delicate balance of factors and when you modify one or two of those factors without knowing exactly what the outcome will provide, you throw off all of the other factors. Those modifications will only make optimizing your mixture more difficult and unpredictable.

Bernie,

You're on target except for the slide mods. Don't drill the piston or cut the spring. Everything else is fine the bike will run great.
