Agree with riding mostly with high beams on. Watch out for those damn deer!

I ride home from work 30 miles on interstates. Not my favorite ride, but it is cooler and less traffic. Main problem is glare from oncoming traffic and the occasional piece of 18 wheeler tire tread that seems to come out of nowhere mighty fast. Riding at night in the rain is a whole nuther adventure

Wear amber lens glasses. It really brightens things up at dusk or on overcast days and helps with glare from oncoming headlights... Install Silverstar headlight bulb, it is 20 - 25% brighter than stock lamp. I ride 30 miles at night on freeway on a regular basis to and from work.

You know what dude, just go out there and ride. Keep your eyes open/moving. If you think you should wear some high visibility stuff go for it. If you want to wear all black, do it. Do what makes you feel comfortable.
One piece of advice I can give you. Ride a road that you're comfortable riding on and one that is well known to you.
If you are scanning the ground all night for rocks, glass, sand, gator skins, and anything else, you're bound to smash in to the *** end of somebody or nail the deer (if applicable). I'm not saying don't look for that stuff, but keep your eyes ahead of you and your head up. Don't cruise through the night with your head down looking for ****. Drive with your high beam(s) on until you get flashed. Just remember, their two are brighter than our single.

Good Luck and Ride Safe

I LOVE riding at night, especially in the summer.

As everybody has mentioned, visability, and deer are the biggest issues. I know that first hand. It was at night, in the rain in a curve that I hit a piece of rebar that I couldn't see. I went down. OUCH. But I still love to ride at night. Rode about 45 miles last night well after dark.

Very peaceful to ride at night.

Riding at night can be enjoyable. Like everyone else said watch for deer, I hit one on 11/4/08. I had a nice concussion, 6 or 8 staples in the back of my dome and some road rash. I'll spare you the pictures of my ugly mug after that one. I now choose to wear a helmet.

Feels wierd to ride at night. I live rural and its so dark that I tend to go faster at night. In Louisiana at night this time of year the bugs are terrible.
