Default Have you ever hit a large pothole?

Just curious as I have seen a lot of new potholes in our area especially on the interstate. I am talking large chunks of concrete missing all the way down to the reinforcement rebar.

I try to keep tabs on where these holes are but some just pop out of no where and of course it is hard to see at night.

As any of you ever hit one or know of someone who has? What happened?

Just wondering if it has crash or damage potential?

Pot holes SUCK! No I havn't gone done as a result of one, but they definately do have the potential of doing so if hit at the right (or wrong depending how you look at it) angle. Mainly what I've experienced is a nice little bounce and a grand adrenaline rush (not the good kind of grand) with the occasional aching of the groin area! Just don't follow cars to closely and always keep your eyes fixated where your headlight ends to see any potential hazards that may come.

Yes ... nothing too serious. I had to go to a heavier wt. fork oil to keep the front end from bottoming out. I was bottoming out going over railroad tracks, the stock 5 weight is just too soft for my liking.

Yes, I have hit them on a bike and in a car more than once..
The car...bent rims.
The bike...no damage (luck), yet pushes you out of the seat.
Night riding is the worst for pot holes...they are so invisiblle.
Some have successfully sued the cities responsible for the pot holes for any damage incurred.

I live in Illinois, the land of pot holes and road construction. The kind of road construction that makes the road worse, not better. Some of these companies I swear...Anyways I hit the biggest bump or, I'm not sure which, pot hole the other night and smacked my go-nads so hard on the seat I thought I was gonna fall off my bike.
The thing is I ride/drive this road every day to and from work and haven't seen or hit this hole/bump since. Luckily, cus damn that hurt!

I live south of Milwaukee. There is some construction on 94 south side of Milwaukee that has the lanes move over to the shoulder. The first day this was set up I travelled through the lane shift. The joint where the old lines were was a crater 5 inches wide and six inches deep between all the lanes. I knew of this spot and always avoided a lane change there. Well with the lane shift you had to drive right over it! Soiled my drawers! The next day they had patch in there!

I took a short-cut once behind a building. Road was rough and full of pot holes. The front-end hit the first one and I almost lost it. Wasn't going very fast, but the holes were deep. When the front-end hit the second hole the rear end hit the first hole and the bike came to a sudden halt. But I kept going. Over the bars and into the next hole. Cost me two broken ribs and several painful nights, not to mention mirrors, turn signals and road-rash. I stay on the pavemant now, short-cut my a$$.

The Bronx has potholes and ridges that are designed to eat vehicles! There are certain stretches I've learned to change lanes in advance.

And that kill factor doesn't take into account the crazy a** cagers!

In both 2008 and 2007, Inrix cited the Cross Bronx Expressway's west-bound exit 4B (Bronx River Parkway) as being the worst intersection in the US!!

I ride through this section everyday

while potholes have happened to me, I've been lucky and avoided any real damage. However, I have heard stories about potholes bending spoked rims...
