I Have seen damage to a rear rim from hitting one.

I was on the freeway going about 70 mph riding two up on my Fatboy. Didn't see the crater until it was too late, snapped a shock and rode home on the little rubber nubby. Very low rider.

 

I hit a big one on the freeway about a month ago. SO hard that I flew about 6in of the seat and my bars bent backwards from the jerk. Scared the chit out of me.

 

i hit one last week,the wife and i are riding with a group of friends coming into a small town when i hit a hole. made me jump a couple inches but when i landed i landed so hard my brake side foot peg broke ! sucked riding home 100 miles with no foot peg.
