Default 08 Nightster Backfiring

If there is anyone out there that could give me some advice on how to correct my nightsters backfiring issue that would be great. I recently installed a set of V&H short shots, screaming eagle forward facing heavey breather and fuel pak. Now when I let off the throttle it backfires. Any help or advice would be awesome.

Thanks.

sounds like the ecm needs to be remapped. i get a little backfiring (mostly when the bike is hot) but not too much. did you install everything or did the dealer/indy. shop? if someone did it for you, obviously you need to go back to them. if you did the install you can prolly contact the technical asst. folks (@ V&H) for help on the mapping. good luck and let us know how you make out.

Did it myself over the weekend. Took a test ride yesterday and run awesome. Fired it up today and now getting the backfire. I emailed V&H. Hopefully they will get back to me soon. I will keep you posted and thanks for the advice.

A backfire is the ignition of unburned fuel. You've modified both ends of the breathing apparatus, without regard to the middle, the fuel/air mix and spark. If you're EFI, a re-map, if carbed, a re-jet.

He does have the fuel pack. Sounds to me like an exhaust leak, but I could be wrong. Check the exhaust flange bolts, could've backed off. Is it a backfire or just a poping sound from the exhaust?

I don't know anything about the mechanical side of bikes, but I had Rush slip ons on my first Nightster and have V&H on the one I have now, and both pop on decel. I never minded it -actually, kinda liked it. I am reading this thread now and wondering if I need to have it checked out. Both bikes were remapped when the exhausts were installed.

shouldn't have to remap after exhaust installation alone. if you do the air intake, you def. have to remap the ecm. i don't mind the little bit of popping i get neither but in the back of my mind i know the bike isn't running as optimal as it should be but a dyno tune is the only way to make it perfect. be prepared to surrender and arm and a leg for that **** though.....

It was remapped when the exhaust and the SE heavy breather were installed. Pops a little...I don't think I'm going to sweat it. What exactly does a dyno tuning do?

Dyno tuning adjusts the air fuel mixture to optimal performance. The popping is from the bike not being tuned perfect to the pipes and ac. I just spent half the day tuning mine with the pcV and got most of mine out. The rest I can live with. But Ido still want to go have it dyno tuned also.
