Default 04 1200XLC hard starting.

So I have a +30k mi 04 1200 custom and recently I've been having trouble starting it after I've been riding for a bit. To me it seems like the starter is fighting the compression. It takes a few seconds to get it to crank over. Then last night the bike kicked over once and went completely dead. Nothing would come on at all. I pulled the positive cable from the battery and it wouldn't spark or nothing. I checked the maxi fuse and it was good as were all the other fuses. I pulled the ecm and the bike started. The only reason I thought to reset the ecm is because I've been having problems trying to install a race ecm. But that's another story.

The engine is stock but I have what I would I consider a stage I kit. (SE II slip fit mufflers and thunder monster bafels and the air cleaner kit with a rejet.) I've searched and can't find anything.

i have an 04 with a stage 1 and my starter clutch went bad around that many miles, however, my clutch also took a **** at the same time and i believe it was related. maybe pull your starter cover and look inside to see if anything is comprimised, its easy enough

Starter clutch! I've gone through 4 of them in the last 54,000 miles, on my 06 XL.

Went through 2 starter clutches in the first 34,000 miles. Finally got smart and got an All ***** starter (from Eastern Performance) and man this thing does have "*****".
