My '04 1200 XLC spits back through the carb when gearing down and hitting the throttle with clutch engaged. Is this normal? Runs fine otherwise.

Not sure what that is, but my Step dad's 02 883 does that at times. If you have not changed spark plugs in a awhile then do so and it night help. They are only a bit over $6.00 for the pair so what do you got to loose?

No prob! My 07 1200 is FI and it was getting a missfire at idle sometimes so I changed the plugs and it don't happen any longer and runs better.

check your battery cables - mine did this when i bought it. when it quit running i found the positive cable burned thru where the end crimps on to the cable where it connects to the bike, not the battery. that was 4k miles ago. no problems since.

Is the carb stock? An idle mixture screw set to lean or pilot jet too small will cause the same thing.

1. Fuel octane too low, 2. air intake gasket leak, 3 timing.
