Pipes, Air cleaner, ECM, oh my!!
Ok I just wanted to change the sound of my nightster 08, so I changed the pipes, to V&H short shots, now it pops some times, not bad. Well the guy at the Harley place tells me I HAVE to upgrade the Air filter, and the cheapest one is 139.00 SE stage one air cleaner.
So it would be 139.00 + 150.00 for the ECM then $70.00 an hour for labor and he said it would take one hour? so thats $400.00+! that's insane!
I was thinking about putting the air filter on my self, is this a hard thing to do? That should knock off $70.00 other then that, I'm at the mercy of Harley huh?
Any tips would help, I don't want to mess up my nightster, also any help on taking off and putting on the air cleaners would be great too!

I changed out my a/c myself and it was a piece of cake. so save yourself the money and do that part yourself. I installed a Arlen Ness Big Sucker on mine and they sent installation instructions with it. you do those 2 your going to have to add some type of fuel management system like a sert, Power Commander. I bought my PC III from fuelmoto and that thing works great.

First off, you DO NOT need to do what the dealer is telling you, it will increase performance, but it is by no means necessary to re-map with only the pipes.
If you still wanted to do this, I would encourage you to look around at different air filter setups. I was in a similar situation as you as far as wanting to do the filter to compliment the pipes, but then needing to do a re-jet (carbed bike, same premise as the ECM). Found a sweet setup from another forum member for 100.00.
Also, the 1 hr labor was for not only the filter, but also doing the remap and getting the bike to run as it should. The install of the filter would take 20 minutes, tops. You could do it with no problems, other than that the bike would be running like **** until the Air/fuel mixture was adjusted appropriately.
I say ride it until you need more power, then fork over the $$$.
