I would be concerned about the position you would be in after 2 years. Which bike would be worth more. I find that after two years of wanting that Harley you passed on, you would want to trade or sell your Yamaha. That $9000 bike now is worth maybe $4000 (ouch) After two years of riding the Harley the only thing you will want is another Harley.

Not true.

If no one were to buy a used bike, then sales of new bikes would decrease. The result of less sales means less bikes being built.

Lets say my bike is finally paid for. No one will buy it from me. Will I be able to go buy another bike? Not until I find a buyer for my old one.
If no one buys used bikes, the dealer wouldn't want to take it as a trade either. resulting in lost sales.

I read a review in one of the mags I get. I think it was Sportster vs. Roadstar. I will have to look for it. I have owned several bikes over the years. But I love cruising around on the sporty. Did a stage on it and have plenty of power for two up. I also consider it an investment on the re-sale end. I wouldn't trade it at the dealer, unless they have a special promotion like they did recently. They try to give you 1500 to 2000 less on a used bike if you trade it in.

The Roadstar is a superb bike. You would definitely be getting more bike for your money, and if you ever want to tour, you are going to be far more comfortable on the Yam. That said, you could be riding in comfort still wishing you had bough the Harley.

Decisions, decisions
If Jap ikes are superb..they wouldn't make them look like harleys so they will sell...check cycle trader that $9000 roadstar can be bought in the 4-5k range.

Get the Harley. I was faced with almost the same decision. I always wanted a Harley, and I have always loved the looks of the Sportster. When I would tell people of my choices, guys would tell me, don't get the Sportster, it's too small and it's a girls bike. I'm glad I didn't listen, the sportster has more power than I think at this time I will ever need and I love riding it. I have never looked back and I don't think I would have been happy with anything else. I bought an 06 1200 Custom and it doesn't seem for a minute too small. The only problem I have with having a Harley, is it keeps raining an I'm not getting to ride. Again GET THE HARLEY, you will be happier in the long run!
