fuel light issues
#11
I have the 08 w/4.5 gallon tank. My average mileage is 47 to 50 mpg. I figure worst case (45 mpg) and fuel up accordingly. I can safely go 170 miles and at least have 1/2 gallon left. i have gone 180 miles no problem. I weigh 215# and usually carry 10 to 15# of crap to work with me every day. Mostly highway. Mostly 70 to 80 MPH. Sometimes my fuel light comes on at 115 miles other times at 140 to 145. Can't rely on it for sure.

My 07 1200C has also had an issue with the light but only after I messed withthe air intake. Now the light will randomly turn on and off even right after a fill up. Typically before I meddled with it, the light wouldnt pop on until about 115 -120 miles.
Doesn't bother me though, I have always used mileage and not the light to guage when I need to fill anyway.

I have the 883 with V&H Shortshots, SE intake and PC III. I have double checked my mileage several times by filling up to the top and resetting the counter until the next fill. I still do this from time to time. Don't know how much diff the mileage on the 1200 is as the gearing is a little different on the 1200 so it probably doesn't pull as hard on the highway as the 883. The specs on the HD website are pretty close to actual mileage, but not exact, as it depends on how much weight you are pulling and how you drive it.

I have an 08 1200C, in my parts manual and in my service manual, my bike does have a "float" that moves up and down with fuel level. Inside the "float" there is a magnet and when the float moves, it passes a signal to a sensor inside the tube that the "float" rides on, sending a signal to turn low fuel light on. It sets very high inside the tank and I think that is what gives the early "low fuel" light signal with a half tank of fuel left. You could fix it, BUT, it would be very time consuming. What you would have to do is remove the pump from bottom of tank and lower the "float" down and use a new strap to fasten it to the pump. (see figures 4.78, 4.80, 4.81, 4.82 on page 4.54, 4.55, 4.56, section fuel pump, 4.17(top right corner of page) in the 08 service manual that you have. Put all back together and road test. If you still don't like it, do it all again, until you are happy. OR you could just watch your second trip meter and ignor the light.(just like I do) Hope that helps. Ride safe.
