Hey man im 19 and i just bought an 08' nightster and let me say i love my bike. its got all the power that i expected and i love the look. also there are alot of stuff you can get to customize it. in my personal opinion i say go for it, but i also say test drive a couple bike first to make sure.

Dude I'm 26 and bought the N as my first bike. I love it. I just wish I didn't look like a monster on it. 6'4" 205 lbs. haha

If you've ridden for awhile, a Nightster prob would make you a decent first street bike.
You might wanna look around for a used one though. Could probably save you some coin
