I guess I'll start with a reply. I too am looking for my first Harley, looking to get a nightster. I have owned a metric cruiser before, Honda VTX1300. Honestly, I do not particularly care for metrics, they trend to have plastic on them, don't have those extra touches to them and seem like they come out of a stamping press. Sure, they are reliable, though Harley has improved alot in this area from what I am told, sure metrics can be faster, but they just seem to miss the idea and feeling that a cruiser bike should give a rider. I am hoping and from what I am told a Harley will give me that missing feeling that the metric did not have for me.. Go check out a harley then a metric, touch the components, you'll see and feel the difference. As for the Vstar 1100 vs sportster well I have never ridden either, but can tell you again the metrics don't do it for me, to me they are just a regular reliable motorcycle, and not something more. I f that is all you want then get the vstar, if you want more from a bike get the harley. Keep in mind resale for a harley will hold it's value better too.

I keep hearing everybody on here talking about how much better the rubber mounted ones are. Yeah, they make a big difference, but my '87 isn't bad at all. The handlebars are rubber mounted and the grips and pegs all have rubber on them, and I can ride that thing all day. Starting from ohio, I've taken it to arizona, new york, daytona bike week, mrytle beach. All over! I normally run 4-500 miles a day and have no problems. It's all in getting your bike set up to suit you. Any bike can make you uncomfortable if you don't make it fit you. just my .02

Well no I haven't posted in a Yamaha forum. I have always wanted a Harley (wanna be) I have the books, magazines, shirts etc. My only worry was that I am to big for a sportster and gonna look like I'm riding my kids bmx bike next to the vstars. I have never rode a sportster. I rode my dads Heritage a couple of times and loved it but thats more money then I have. Also is an 883 enough or should I look at the 1200's?

Congrats on the new Sporty!
What did you get? Can you post a pic?
FWIW, I'm 6'1" 190 lbs 34" inseam and ride the snot out of my Sporty, around town or all around the thousands of miles of wide open Montana for week-long trips.
One thing that didn't come up so far (I think) is that the after-market for the Harley is a zillion times better. Little by little, you will figure out just how you want to make that bike your unique machine (new seat, windshield, grips/pegs, pipes, etc.)
Enjoy!
