I may get some stainless and make my own custom mount.
I too like the simple, clean look, tinman, but I really like having a tach. Do you see my tach in this photo?

I put a Tach on my ’99 XL883 and I like it. If your XL883 is stock, in 5th gear at 80, you are doing over 4,000 RPM. I did a 650 mile Highway ride from Redondo Beach CA to Phoenix AZ and then back to Kingman AZ all at 80+MPH and the bike sure was a bit buzzy at best but it certainly didn’t hurt it any. I eventually changed out the stock XL883 27 Tooth Transmission drive Pulley to a 30 Tooth Transmission drive Pulley to lower my RPM at 80+ MPH speeds and I am very glad I did. I get better gas mileage and the lower revs make it much more tolerable to ride continuously at 80+ MPH speeds.

Just a guess here, but I'd estimate that I have at least 20,000 miles on my bike at 75 - 80 mph. Did almost 200 yesterday, and will do that again today. No problems.

i have both an ultra (07) and a sporty 883 (06). the sporty does seem more buzzy than the bagger. i have had it up to 70 but not much more and it felt fine. i have also over revved it and had it cut out, actually it only cuts out one cylinder, but thats enough. but there is just something fun about the sporty buzzing around town and stuff.

Is it hard on the bike to cruise at 70-75 mph continuously?
I sure as **** hope it isn't bad for the bike. My rolling average over 1100 miles is 75mph!

And people wonder why I pack 11 gallons of fuel

The only problem I have with speeds over 70 is that the wind is trying to pull my hands off the bars. I found a windshield on Craig's list and installed it. Haven't been able to test it much yet but I'm counting on it helping.

The bike on the other hand is really just stating to breath @ 75. Getting right on top of the cam. she will pop up to 85 with no hesitation in about .5 sec from 70. Now if I can just hold on.

I think you're fine. The advantage to the 1200 is that is has better gearing ratio for speeds and rpms like that, so I feel like I have a lot left at 75. I dont go any faster though, because I'd like to live to see 75.
