Default 1995 Sporster XL1200 Oil shot out of resevoir

After changing my oil, I was allowing the engine to run for a few minutes. After a few minutes oil shot the fill plug dipstick out of the resevoir along with some oil. What is causing this? Any help I can get would be appreciated. The bike only has 8,000 miles on it. Thanks, John

One time thing or did it do it again? If one time I'd have to say air pocket in the oil system (New filter) when it made it's way into the tank.

It is the first time it happened, so far. I shut it down right away and am afraid to run it.

Air pocket seems the most likely... Did you add 4 oz. to the new oil filter, and let a little oil drip out the tube when you went to fill it up? Doing those things should avoid air bubbles, but I didn't know that they were that big of a deal!

Edit: it wasn't freezing cold was it?

I added the 4oz. to the new filter, but didn't let any drip out of the tube. There didn't seem to be much more than a quart when draining the old oil out. It was cold but not freezing. Around 50 degrees outside. Is it possible the problem is that I didn't run the bike at all prior to changing the oil? Which would result in overfilling with new and the old?

Are you sure that you drained the oil and not the primary? The primary has a screw in plug and the oil has a rubber tube.

You did not allow all of the oil to drain out and the oil tank built up to much pressure. You are not the first to do this and won't be the last. If you check the oil tank you will find it is full of oil. Drain the tank again, and then look into the oil tank with a flash light and you will see it still has a lot of oil in it. I use a turkey baster to suck all the old oil out before I refill the tank. I doubt if you caused any real problems.

It sounds like I didn't drain it all. I didn't know there was a screw plug drain also. Is it located near the drain tube?

The only drain for the engine oil is the rubber hose tucked into the frame. the screw in plug is for draining the trans/primary oil. Sounds like it had an air pocket to me.
Try draining the oil again then adding 2 quarts to the tank, then open the hose again to let a little oil drain out .
That should purge any air pockets from the tank. Be sure to leave the cap off when draining the oil
