Question 1000 mi. service on 1200C

Can anybody tell me what all is involved in the 1000 mile service on my 1200C, is this something I should just do myself? What is the cost involved?

The 1,000 mile service is the final check of the manufacturing process. I suggest having that done at the HD dealer. Then get a service manual, motorcycle jack, and do the rest of the maintenace yourself.

The cost for the 1,000 mile service is around $200 - $250 depending on your area. There is actually quite a bit involved, as far as checking bolts, torque settings etc etc etc.

+1 on what SportyPig said. At the 1000 mile service the dealer is essentially certifying and signing off that the bike is up to factory spec. After that DIY.

In theory I would agree with you guys but I have yet to see a dealer actually do a "real" service . They do a glorified oil change and if your lucking they will do your primary and or clutch let alone check fasteners.
The cost here on Long Island for a glorified fluid change is around $300 bucks.

It seems that way around here as well.

I agree that not all stealership service departments are the same. But what sporty said is absolutely true. Find a good dealer and have the first service done, and stay involved, ask questions and make them realize you want all that your paying for. Once the dealer signs off that your bike is up to par, do the rest yourself as sporty suggested.

Hey thanks for asking the question Driller. And I will take SportPigs advice also and go to the dealer I bought the bike from for the first service when it's ready.

you are welcome willw. After several used bikes this is my first new one and I know how one sided the dealers can be so I ask in here. I want to do it right and ride forever.

I had my indy do my first service and he actually found quite a few bolts way out of torque specs (motor mounts, triple tree bolt, etc). I really do not feel that if I would have brought it to the dealer I picked it up from that I would have gotten a proper 1000 mile service, especially if their service department is anywhere near as crappy as their salesman.

Default 1000 miles

I did what sportypig suggest at 1800 miles, it costed me about $270, and got sync oil put in on all 3 tanks. I also got a bike wash, as my bike was all road grime. next time 5000 mark, I will tried to do it myself, the place where I took my MSF class, also has a class on oil change, checking belts, adjust the tension on grips and others, they will provide the oil, you need to bring tools and a oil filter, and your bike. Since I use the sync oil, I need to provide that too. I think it is a good class to take, hands on training...ie picture worth a 1000 words.they have a class in April, June and August....I will take the June class if it is not filled, like last year, I missed out on the Sept class
