Default ignition help

hi everyone, i'm in the process of getting an older '88 evo bike running. it seems that the front cylinder is intermidatly misfiring on this bike. the plugs and plug wires are good, and the coil was replaced to try to correct the problem, but it still misses. my question is, what sends voltage to the coil tells it to fire? is this the stator? my guess is that the problem is with what ever is telling the coil to distribute spark. i would say the distributor, but i don't think it works like that on this bike. i have rebuild the S&S carb and it has fresh gas, so i've ruled that out. thanks for your help.
