Default Insurance

Well, I went by my insurance company today to renew my car's insurance and got a quote for my bike. $1200/year for full, and $300/year for liability.
Is the $1200 really worth it? I mean, I'm buying the bike, I still want to get a different helmet other than my full face, I need a vest, and I want to get a few upgrades to start me off.
Do I really NEED full??

Also, forgot to add, but I'm in Japan. That is basically my ONE option of company. They insure my car. They are the cheapest on the island.

Is it paid for? If so, are you willing to risk the loss in the event of an accident that is your fault? Even if you don't want collision, get comp to cover fire, theft, vandalizm, and animal hits. Comprehensive is usually pretty cheap.

If its a new bike I'd put getting good insurance ahead of buying upgrades. Can you get a 6 month policy instead of a full year? $1200 for a year sounds a little steep. Have you tried Rider insurance?

Find a Diaryland agent and get a quote from them. I have my 07 1200C insured with them with a 500$ deductible and includes collison and comp. 300$ a year

Prices vary widely from one company to the next, shop around. Geico & Foremost rates are usually good. Of course your age and driving record have a lot to do with it. I pay less than $200 / year for full coverage with a rider for $3,000 to cover add-on parts.

+1. Prices vary by location, company, bike, deductible limit, and whether the scoots paid for vs financed. If it's being financed, you'll need full coverage until it's paid off. If you're paying cash, you don't have to keep it fully covered. Mine's been on full coverage with State Farm since new for something like $300 or $350/year. You need to take into consideration that you're in Japan also.

find a independant dealer and stay away from compaies that spend big money on advertising....for just shy of $1200 a year i insure my bike(full), my car(full) and my house defiantly shop around, a lil time and a few phone calls is way cheaper than $1200.

I suppose I forgot to tell ya, I'm in Japan. There is literally one insurance company that is cheap over here, and those are their prices.

I pay $250 a year for full coverage from Progressive. But I'm not a youngster, and I have a clean driving record with no accidents.

Well, for the states, that price is pretty steep, depending on ur driving record as well. But I am not familiar with insurance rates in Japan so I couldn't help you bud. For what its worth, I would NEVER pay $1200/yr for insurance on a bike, but again, it also depends on what kind of bike you're insuring (sportbike, cruiser, dual sport, etc.)
