Grandpa told me about air cleaners
Well, what he had to say was 30 years ago. It makes some sense. You don't need an air cleaner on a street bike motor. If you ride in the dirt, then yes. If you ride the street, you don't need one. He said "(Cars are one thing, they run at all times of the year and have a hood over an engine compartment to catch lot's of dirt, bikes don't have that. Have you ever seen a dragster with an air cleaner? More air is more horse power, the more you get in, the more you get back)". Yea, he was a nut, but I tend to think he was on the right track. K&N seems to be the best bet for Hiflo AC's yet. I think they understand what he knew. They say you eat a ton of dirt in your life and the only way it will kill you is to fall on your head all at the same time. Anyway, to all the girl's and boy's out there, always keep it in the wind.................

How did Grandpa explain all that dirt that collected under the hood after 20K miles.
Ever seen a tractor or truck off the side of the road that's kicking up a dirt cloud that covers the highway?
Professional dragsters don't go more than a couple miles (1/4 mile at a time) before the motor gets torn down & rebuilt.

Grandpa grew up in a time where there was no fuel injection and carburetors were big and sucked alot of gas diluting any dirt. Now days it takes a fraction of that gas and air to move the same vehicle. Todays technology relies on air moving freely and smoothly without much resistance. The slightest speck of dirt or grain of sand can ruin an engine should it get into the right place.
