chopped rear fender question...

chopped rear fender question...
so I've seen a few newer nightster and things with chopped rear fenders and I love the look but I have a question, are you guys doing it yourself? Or do you buy the fender from somewhere? I wouldn't imagine it be hard to take the piece off, hack at it with the ole recip. saw then round it off smooth with a grinder. the only thing I could see being difficult would be getting it even on both sides while grinding... Then I'm assuming you re locate the tail light wiring with whatever custom tail you want near the flip out license frame and some make shift turns and call it a day.
I did some searching for a how-to or something and all I found were pics which looked great but not what I was looking for.
Let me know what everyone thinks...

i just cut my fender off, (check my post...Just chopped my bike) and i used a cutting wheel, 3" , and i put masking tape on the fender, and drew with a marker where i wanted it to be cut. the tape helped keep the paint from flaking off.
gonna have to re wire the brakes on the side mount license plate soon.
hope that helps a bit!

As previously stated, put some masking tape on the fender, mark on the tape where you want the cut, and use a cut-off wheel or even better-a dremel with a cut-off wheel, as the dremel will allow for a much finer/more precise cut. The tape aides in keeping the paint from chipping/flaking off. A recipricating saw will most likely be too aggressive, and may grab the metal causing the fender to bend & flex, which will crack the paint pretty good.

I just covered the area I was going to cut with painters tape then drew my cut line on it. I used an angle grinder to chop it and then used a bench grinder to round the edges. I used a file to take care of any remaining burs.
I didn't end up having any paint chipping at all. I ended up repainting my bike anyways, but if I was going to keep the stock paint I could have easily just gotten some touch up paint for the exposed cut line.
