I am expecting to make my first ride of any distance in March and would like to have some idea how far I can go before I need to find the reserve valve. I have a 2000 883/1200 with the SE intake and exhaust. I plan to rent a V-Rod for my daughter (from Ohio) and weather permiting we are planning to ride over to and then down a section of the Oregon coast. Any statistics would be helpful.

Well, I've got an '00 883/1200+ conversion & get ~130 before fill up/flippin to reserve...Not sure about a Vrod...But I'd say you'd both be ready around ~100 to 150miles, at least just to stretch the legs.

If your Sportster has a peanut tank like mine, then shoot for a break/fillup at 80 miles. That is long enough to ride between breaks and eliminates worries about having to flip to reserve at just the worst possible time. Depending on the conditions, you may go considerably farther, but it makes no sense to me. My riding buddies with high volume tanks are ready for a break anyway.

Yep, same here. My low fuel light comes on right at 80 and if I'm not at a gas station by 120 I'm in trouble.

+1 - 100-120 miles and I fill the tank with about 2.5 gallons.

3.3 gallon peanut = 80 to 90 miles
4.5 gallon tank = 140 to 170 miles (figure about 120 if you are loaded right up with gear)

Yesterday I got 48 MPG on my 883/1200 but I average about 45. So with the 3.3 gal. tank it goes, like the others have already said, about 120 miles but the yellow gas light is on at about 80 miles. I have a VROD that averages 38 MPG so the range is very similar. I also like stopping about every 80 miles or so.
