Default What to look for in a used 1200

Hi guys,
Thank you for all of your input on my question about using a 1200 Sportster as a commuting bike. I'm leaning toward a 1200 Low - I like the smaller front wheel diameter for handling, and foot peg position.

More questions... first of all, a few maintenance questions, regarding a 2005 or newer bike, which is what my price range will allow. I've never had a belt-drive bike. Does the belt need any adjustment or maintenance? Also, does the 1200 engine need valve adjustments? Beyond the basics like oil changes, tires, brake pads, etc, is there anything that needs frequent attention? (keep in mind, I'm used to Hondas)

Also, regarding 2005 or so Sportsters, I'm good at spotting the obvious stuff, but as I'm shopping, can you guys recommend any particular areas that I should be looking at, as far as trouble spots?

Thank you!

The belts don't hardley ever need anything, just inspect at your service intervals for wear or tears,as long as you have the stock push rods and hyd lifters will be no service there.Do the same keeping nuts and bolts tight,I have seen alot of Metric bikes that have stuff fall off from neglect also.I myself prefer the fuel injected,07 was the first year for that.

Hydraulic lifters... cool! It's a P.I.T.A. to do valve adjustments on the Hondas, I won't miss that little chore.

An EFI bike would probably be just out of my range, unfotunately, but that is a great feature to consider if I can get a good deal on an '07.

Thanks!

First thing I check is the muffler bearing. Make sure it's not dry.

Thanks, JW. I thought they only had those on the export models.

Just run it and take care of it by the service manual and you'll be fine.
