I run either the chrome 63796-77A or 63813-90T filters in my Sportster, depending on the time of the year. These are 30 mic filters that are recommended for Big Twin EVO engines.

The 63813-90T is a longer filter that has more surface area to provide a little additional cooling, and I sometime run one of them during the hottest 'dog days' of summer here in the lower midwest... Only negative thing is that they do stick out a little further than the regular length filters.

Normally I just run the shorter 63796-77A.

The extra surface area of the 63813-90T might not provide a lot of additional cooling of the oil, but I imagine it works as well if not better than the 'cooling fin' covers some people buy.
+1 I run the longer 63813-90T chrome filter year round. The dealer here sells them for just under $9.00. They are good quality, made by Champion. I also agree with OFG, the 5 or 10 micron filters like K&N just don't belong on EVO's, the filter is likely to stay in bypass.

I've read and seen to much bad info on Fram filters. I'd never put one one my lawn mower, let alone my bike or cage.

I take it the 5 or 10 micron unit filters smaller particals than a 30 but gets plugged up and causes it to go to bypass? or am I way off base.

That's partially correct. The EVO motor oil pump also operates at a lower pressure and isn't designed to push through the 5 or 10 micron media.

Ah, we had to go an mention filters. Fram 90% of the changes for me. Too much crap out there about filters, oil and such. Too many guys with far more miles and years than me still use Fram cause thats what's easy to find. But I'm not going to argue it with anyone same as with the oil and spark plugs.

Not to doubt your opinion but I wonder why HD would recommend the 5 or 10 if the oil pump wasn't designed for it.
Would the EVO motor have smaller oil galleries that could plug up with particals as small as say 20 microns?

HD's recommendation for 5 or 10 micron filters applies to BT Twin Cam motors not EVO's. In the early Twin Cams the small oil passages were getting clogged using 30 micron filters.

Exactly. I've never had a failure with the Frams on any of my vehicles, nor my father. Also, if I remember correctly, Indian Larry used to throw the plain Jane orange Frams on his scoots.

Yep, exactly....

I don't even use the 5 or 10 micron filters on my Big Twins.... I've seen some of them that have be opened (sawed in half) and it looks like they were in 'bypass mode' most of the time....

Because of that I use the same 30 micron filters on my BT's as well....

Well, I just found on-line that the Fram is 10 micron. Oh well, I'll run it for a while until the warmer temps get here or I start racking up some mile, which won't be anytime soon---daytime temps in the 10-20's & snow/ice.
