This ain't Harley's first time at this kind of dance. They did this before with the 883 I believe, It's been a few years back though. It didn't hurt them then, and I can't see it hurting them now.

So is the Custom category Dyna's and Softails combined?
I'm also curious to see sales data on individual models instead of model groups. Wonder if they release such data to the public. Also not surprised about the Touring models cleaning house on sales. They are ALL OVER the roads no matter where I travel in the USA. I must see 12 touring bikes for every 1 Sportster....

As far as sales of model groups, below is the total year to date sales for both 2007 and 2008;

Touring ~ (2008) 101,887 (2007) 114,076

Custom ~ (2008) 140,908 (2007) 144,507

Sportsters ~ (2008) 60,684 (2007) 72,036

Buells ~ (2008) 13,119 (2007) 11,513

The "Custom Family" includes the Dyna and Softail models, and I'm pretty sure it also includes the few VRod bikes that are sold.

Don't recall ever seeing a breakdown showing numbers of individual bikes sold (such as FatBoy's, 1200C's, etc...)

I had heard that for a number of years the Softail FatBoy was the largest selling individual model, but I can't verify if that was actually true or not.

It's also interesting to see the difference in sales between 2007 and 2008.

Close to 12,000 fewer Sportsters were sold in 2008, around 13,000 fewer Touring Models, but the 'Customs' were down less than 4,000 bikes.

The "Ride Free" program is not really a bonanza for the dealers. The Motor Company gives the participating dealer an allowance of about $1,000 for 883 and $1500 for 1200 sporty qualifying trades. The rest of the loss of the trade is the dealer's responsibility. Only one dealer here in Central Ohio is participating in the "Ride Free" program, so it can't be that great for the dealer.
As to resale values of our bikes, I have to think a few million$ advertising that recent model Sportys get 100% of the list price when trading for new BTs has to be a positive impression of the value retention of sporty's in general. Sure, dealers will likely see some lowering of asking prices of their used sporties, but it is unrealistic in this market to expect to get dealer price for our bikes in private sales anyway.

Because of the surplus of used Sportsters at the dealership I heard they are going to start a new purchase program this spring;

Buy a new Big Twin for suggested retail price and they will throw in a used Sportster of your choice for $1.00...
