Default Help with 2004 883XL rejet

Hey guys,

I have a 2004 883XL and was thinking about doing a rejet. I have cycleshack slip on's and I'll be getting a K&N air filter soon and I've read that you should do a rejet after this. It sounds like you should go with a #45 on the slow jet so I've got that down. But I have read conflicting reports on what size to go with the main. Some people say to go higher, others say lower. Can I get some input from anyone with an '04+? I read the article on sportster.org but they won't give a recommendation on an 04 and up. I have also read that you should replace the spring to get improved throttle response.

Also, where is a good place to buy the jets. I've seen the main's at JP cycles but I could not find the slow jets there.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

I got the same set up on my 06. Drill some holes in the backplate while your at it. Big holes. I run a 45 slow and a 180 main. Some people say that a 180 is too big but it works really well for me. As far as the slow goes I'm more than 3 1/2 turns out on my mixture screw but so far it's working fine. Mine was actually running lean before I moved that screw out a little. You can see what my plugs looked like by searching this section. The leaness should be corrected now.

A 180 is fine if you make up for it by screwing around with the mixture a bit like eazyrider said. You could try that and also pick up a 175 just to see which works best though. Those are the two I'd recommend.

I was definitely going to drill out the backplate. I was thinking of just using a dremel to cut out some sections of it.

I'm definitely going with the 45 for the slow, but you guys recommend either a 175 or 180 main? I thought I read somewhere that the '04's+ run a little rich at WOT so some people even step down the main. So am I mistaken? I was planning on going with a main around that size until I read the tuning article on sportster.org.

Try both and see what the bike likes. Get a uni-bit to drill out you backplate, it's the coolest thing ever.[IMG][/IMG]

My backplate has huge holes drilled into it but I didn't want to take everything off to take a pic. Just use your imagination and go big.

Yeah I saw. Where did you guys pick yours up from? They are way cheap online but you have to pay shipping. I was thinking of just picking them up from the dealership.

I purchased this bike in California and just read that the stock jet on these bikes is already a 180, is this true?

Can't really say...Cali is kinda funny with their MC laws.

I'd say go with the 175 if you're not sure. And an adjustable needle while you're at it. Those things work wonders when tuning.

Oh, and I get my jets from a place here in town. Alot of Indy's typically have them on hand.
