Default 97 1200 rear running and turn signals

I just finished up what I think is a pretty cheap mod and safety feature. I found some Sportster front turn signals at a Flea market and bought two of them. In case you didn't know they are the same housing front and rear and are completly interchangable. Went to the Harley dealer and bought two red lenses and replaced the stock rear turn signals with the fronts I got at the flea market. Colors on all of the wires are the same as the stock rears where the black is ground and the purple is the turn signal. The fronts come with an extra blue wire which is the running light. I found that, at least on mine, there is an unused position in the plug for the tail light and since my new/old turn signals still had the plug pins on the end. I tied both blue wires from the turn signals together and pushed the "pin" into the existing empty hole on the connector after verifying that there is 12v there when the ignition is on.

Turn signals - $11

red lenses - $ 7

couple of hours wrenching on my scoot - priceless

No point to this thread... Just tired of winter and trying to make the best of it by still playing with my bike. I'm going riding tomorrow.. Don't car how cold it is. That's what they make long underwear for.

Yep, I did the same thing to mine when I converted to the smaller mini bulb signals. All four signals came with three wires......Got to playing around with the connector housing in the rear & figured I could run the rear signals as running lights as well.

They also sell a kit for less than $15 that allows you to convert the tail lights into running/brake/turn lights. Includes a snap-on module for under the seat and red lenses. That's what I did to my '08. Might only be for newer bikes, though, I'm not sure.
