Default Gas Tank Removal - 2007 XL50

Hey,

I was given the HD Garage Door Opener kit for Christmas and plan to install myself. I've heard the cleanest way is to remove the gas tank for wiring purposes. I picked up the official Service Manual this weekend, and of course it says I would have to siphon out all the fuel before removing it. I'm a pretty good wrench on hot rods and Jeeps, but this is my first foray into bike mechanics. Is the fuel removal really necessary? Am I an idiot for even asking? :-)

Thanks!

its not absolutely neccessary, but the gas sloshing around when you lift the tank will make it really easy to slip out of your hands.

when i know i need to take my tank off i just run it close to empty.

+1 Can't you just siphon the gas into a small gas can? It will probably be way better than kicking yourself in the *** after you scratch the tank on something.

Well, will make good practice. You're supposed to remove the tank when you do anything, including changing tires.

Put a set of buckhorns on my 99 sporty. I didn't drain the tank. Figured, Hell , whats 3 gallons. Got it done but it is alot more than you think. When I put the aux lites on the dyna, I drained the tank as advised, It was a heck of alot easier. Anytime you change elec it goes along the frame , under the tank. Be prepared for it and have the tools and skills to do it. If not let the dealer or a good indy do it. Know your limitations, exceeding them will cost you money, or worse yet, time in the saddle.

I have no idea...

But what a beautiful bike you have there...

I have to say that I was SO relieved to learn what this thread was about....

I thought maybe another misguided soul was going to remove the peanut tank from their piece of art......

Thank God

Thanks for all the input!

I will get a pump and siphon out the fuel. As you have all said - I might as well get used to it.

Thanks again,

There is nothing to it on an 07 with fuel injection, the fuel line is a quick connect like an airline, no gas will come out when you disconnect it, then just unclip the electrical harness to the pump and undo two bolts and it's off, there is no need to remove the fuel first.
