The HD products don't cut it in my opinion. The best stuff I have used is the RGS Labs FW1 Waterless Wash and Wax.

James,
There is a clear coat paint over the gas tank and fenders. Do not wax or clean outside of water and a littile soap. Pour the mix over the bike. Avoid washing the paint. Chrome and the other areas are a different issue.

Road grime or gas are the only reasons to clean the tank and fenders.

I use Turtle Wax ICE synthetic liquid polish on all my vehicles (many of them with black finishes that tend to get 'swirl marks' when using many products)..

I use S100 Cycle Cleaner and finish it off with mother's wax for paint and polish for chrome.

Yes, there is a clear coat however, there are a number of waxes and polishes that are designed for that clear coat. S100 is just such a product as is Z best, Zymoil and many others. Not waxing the clear coat is no different than leaving your single stage paint unprotected from harmful UV rays.

I use Mothers metal polish as well a Semi chrome and they both work very well on chrome and such. I use Blue Coral automotive wash with a very soft cloth covered sponge to give the bikes a bath and there is so much wax on them the water won't stay on.

I use HD Sunwash for washing, which isn't very often, unless I ran through rain-soaked roads which makes a mess. For wax - same as for all my vehicles - Meguiares Gold Class - safe for clear coat and lasts a long time. I have a habit of losing my mind at fuel stops when smoking hot ladies walk by - and lose control of the pump nozzle - - and spray soaking explosions of fuel everywhere - which means it's time to wax again.....

I detail for my local HD dealer. 3-M sells polishes that will remove the swirls. It takes a lot of elbow grease to make them disappear. On black bikes I use 2 buckets for washing. One bucket for soapy water, the other for rinsing the wash mitt. Before you put the mitt into the soap, shake it vigorously in the rinse water. This will remove any particles, that mite scratch, from the mitt. Black bikes always look better in the shade.
