When I remove a battery from the '04 and up Sportsters, I disconnect the neg. lead at the bike - not at the battery. Pull the battery, swap the neg. lead over to new battery and route it back the way it was. Much easier.
You could have hooked the pig tail up without removing the battery if you hook the neg. eye on the pigtail to the neg post on the engine where the neg battery cable attaches. That's what I did anyway then tuck the pigtail in behind the cover. When you put it back you can remove the neg cable from the engine, hook it to the battery while it's out then feed the cable back where it came from
Hmm. And here I was thinking I was just being lazy by doing the same thing.
Good to see it's an approach others have taken, and as he said, it's really easy to do it this way and I just leave it attached and tuck the connector inside the cover when I don't have it plugged in. Have not had any problems with this approach.
I read on another forum that you could buy a 10mm wrench specifically made to remove the tensioner belt on a Ford escort, or bend one yourself, about 60%, to better get at the battery bolts. I will be bending my own later today.

That helps some but not with the neg. I can usually get enough but disconnecting the neg at the ground is probably easier. BTW my tender came with both the permanent pigtail and one with clamps
