Default Some questions from a new Sportster rider

I've been riding my 883 Low around for the past 2 weeks or so and absolutely love it. I do have a couple of questions though.

How much gas do I have left when the gas light comes on?
What is the best way to put gas in it, stick just the tip of the fuel pump into the tank? I want to make sure I'm filling it up all the way.
I'm concerned I'm not filling it up all the way, because it seems like I only got about 80 or so miles out of my last tank.
Related to above, does the gas millage improve after the break in period?
How are the shocks supposed to be on these? Right now it seems like I feel every little bump in the road.

I'm looking at adding the following to my sportster
1. Passenger seat with back rest
2. Forward controls
3. Small windshield for freeway travel
4. Sadelbags

Any other suggestions for a new rider?

If I'm not mistaken I think you get around 40 miles or so after the light comes on and I think I've read somewhere on here that the mileage will improve after break in. as for filling the tank, I don't put it in all the way and just ease it in until i can see the gas.

what sucks is that when filling up in Cali we have these stupid boots that go over the spout so it shuts off automatically at about 75% capacity... in order to top off yo;ou have to physically hold back the boot and watch it until it hits the top... fuggin lame i tell ya!

as far as your mods, forward controls are the best thing ever for me, and i am only 6'0 but the mid controls were murder on the knees!

as far as suggestions for a new rider... ride with the assumption every cager is out to get you and always, ALWAYS stop and look before taking off from a light. almost been killed twice by mini-vans with screaming kids that ran the light.

most importantly, enjoy!

About 40 after the light comes on would be about right, yeah the tank isn't like your ol'lady,ya don't have to shove it all the way in,unless you are really tall you might consider freeway pegs and keep the mid controls, might try moving the shocks for a different preload, might help the ride, again depends what you weigh,Sporster shocks arn't famous for being right.

If your around 6 feet tall you'll need the forward controls.

I wish mine were even farther forward than what they are. I may wind up making some.

I have forward controls and love them (I'm 5'-8"), changed the rear shocks and fork springs and put on a sundowner seat to improve the ride (XLs are a hard ride). Love the bike, tho, and its spirit, and I'm on it for the long ride. It is really great.

Low fuel gauge go's on at about 115-120 miles, I get about 160 miles from a full tank (toped off gas tank). Mustang seat is the BEST!! Shocks you can go over to Road King Shocks. This will help. Good luck & Ride SAFE
