Different tail light suggestions
I've got a 99 sportster 1200 custom. I absolutley hate the way the factory tail light looks. It's bulky and ugly. Has anyone here found a good looking replacement light other than the "lay-down" style? Ever found a good looking "tombstone" style that fit well? My model has an indent in the fender for the tail light, so I'm thinking anything other than a stock shape would be difficult to cover.
Since I have a machining and welding back ground, I've been contemplating taking the stock rear fender, filling and shaving that indent and finding a nice weld on tail light. But that takes time away from riding damnit!
Show me what you got, I'm open for suggestions.
Below is an example of what the stock light looks like on the fender.

You can cut the fender above the tail light and use an old "limp dick" light.I've always liked these and you can find them all over for about $35.00 or so.I bought mine used an painted it.Also check out ebay under "vintage stop lights or brake lights".........some pretty cool ones out there.

I think you were on track when you started talking about metal work. I live in Vegas so there isn't a lot of winter down-time that some folks have to deal with but if you're concerned with losing riding time, I'd look to find a fender that you can rework while yours is still on the scoot. When my buddy and I did this paint set on the sporty that's what we did and I also took the front fender and smoothed it out...welded it up and ditched all the rivets then re-mounted it lower to the wheel.
