Default HD warranty?

I was told by the dealer I had to get the 1k service done or it would void my warranty. Is this true?

The 1K service should be done, but the dealer doesn't have to do it. You can do it. You will need to keep records and receipts showing dates and parts/fluids used.

No!!!

You have to get equivalent service work done but it can be done at any
indie shop or in your garage as long as you save the receipts that show you
did the oil changes, and if you do it yourself it might help to have a receipt
for a service manual.

The HD warranty is the biggest scam in the world, and most dealers use
scare tactics to help the scam along. It's a scam because they pressure into
paying the ridiculous rates for HD service... but it is illegal to void your
warranty because you had work done at another shop or did it yourself
.
Best thing for you to do is let your warranty expire (please say you didn't
buy the extended warranty) and buy your self the factory service manual. It
explains how to do all of the scheduled srevice work and you do not need a
boat load of specialized tools to do that work, just a good socket set and
some torx and hex head drivers.

That said you should get the 1K service done at your dealer just so you
know what you're saving later on when you start doing the smart thing. ANd
remember that a 5K service costs about twice as much as a 1K and a 10K
costs about twice as much as a 5K service.

Will not doing the 1K service void your warranty? - YES

Does it have to be done by the dealer? - NO, but you need to document the work, date, mileage, etc. and keep dated receipts for the parts/materials used. If the dealer tries to say otherwise, mention the Magneson-Moss Act and watch him squirm.

I do however recommend that the dealer do the 1K service, they are signing off that everything from the factory is up to snuff. After that DIY if you are able.

By that kind of logic, then you should have all of your service done by the dealer.

Forget what the dealer is trying to scare you with. Do it yourself so you will know it gets done or take it to a reputable indy shop or the dealer and hope it gets done. I'd bet a lot of 1k services amount to roll 'em in change, change the fluids, hold the bike hostage a few hours, and then charge the customers big bucks.

Not at all. Other than the oil change, the most important part of the 1K service is to check all adjustments and the torque on every fastener. While you can receipt the oil and filter there is no way for an individual to prove he re-torqued everything on the bike as the 1K service calls for. Having the dealer sign off on that service simply minimizes any possible disputes down the road should a problem arise.

I don't doubt that many dealers skip all the checks required at the 1K service, but they are signing off that they did so and are thus liable if any related problems arise.

But, to each his own......
