I can understand the $$$ constraints, but if it is at all possible, go with the 1200. You won't regret it.
However, having said that, just get something and start riding. It is a joy that can't be explained in words. You have to experience it for yourself...

I'm new to the list but have to comment. I read in the archives a thread about how big is too big for a Sportster. Last week I bought off e-bay my first HD. It is an 883 with 1200 kit. After I called GEICO to put insurance on it found out it is a Hugger. I'm 6'7" 220 lbs. so I have to be toward the top of the list for tallest Sportster rider. My buddy told me I am going to look like a "monkey rump'in a football" (not exact quote) I want to add forwards to mine but to be honest I don't feel it is that small under me.
If you can get the 883 now you can always jug it up to a 1200 later when you can put some more money together if you decide it is necessary.
I was in kind of the same boat. Buy a Sportster I could afford or go without until Lord knows when.
