I would bet you you just had a dud bearing, it happens.
As far as beating the axle out the first time; when I removed mine for the first time on my 2000 it had maybe 2000 miles on it and I had to use a muffler gun to rattle it out, I found the newer bikes like 06 and up have anti seize on the axles to stop this problem.

I think the reason for changing the bearings after beating on the axle to remove it is that when you hit the axle you are beating the bearing ***** against the races and pit them then you don't have a smooth machined surface anymore. The rough race will promote premature wear on the parts and and cause bearing failure.
