wow, i paid close 275 for the 1k and 350 for the 5k for my nigtster at the dealer. i decided to do the 1k on my softtail myself and cost around 60 for the parts and fluids.

Thats awesome you had a good experience at your dealer. I am a Harley Tech and its disturbing seeing how many dealers leave bitter tastes in you guys' mouth. Hope you the best in future services as well as many others here.


On a personal note. All you guys that bitch about service, when your front end clunks because of loose neck berings, or your fering brackets are broke, or misc electrical problems, fuel pump problems, you are the guys who come into the dealer blaming the world and want us to drop everything that minute to fix it because you have a big ride to go on, then expect us to pull strings so it dont cost you money because you have no service records with harley davidson. How are they supposed to know you performed routine maintence? There are things we go over in our services that you simply dont have the know-how, tools or training to do....End of story, im sure theyll be some of you arguing saying you can but, as stated before you guys come running in crying like little girl with a skun knee excpeting dealers to bend over backwards because you think your intitled to the world because your a harley davidson owner...Get in line!

As a rider contemplating the purchase of my first HD within the next year, this thread completely confused me.

One of the selling points other HD riders have made about HD bikes is how easy they are to maintain. I anticipated doing normal maintainance myself. I'm not a mechanically inclined person, but so far have managed to do my own fluid checks/changes, etc myself. Tire changes and anything bigger I take to a dealer.

Ok, now some folks appear to be making the argument that the bikes NEED to be taken into a dealer. That routine checks are somehow complex or require special training.

Which is it?

If you can turn a wrench and purchase the service manual for your bike, you can service it. No valve adjustments, it is all very basic when it comes to service. Follow the manual. Take your time and do it right and that HD will present you with miles and miles of dependable miles of fun.

Ide reccomend brigning the bike into the dealer for the major servies, 1, 5, 10, 15, 20k miles. Anything in between do it yourself because all we do is change the motor oil any other service. The major services take 3 hours to do, from adjusting the neck berings, to clutch, lubing the cables, belt tension, etc etc....


You can do whatever you want but service records are your best friend when something bad goes wrong

I choose to take my bike to the dealer for service. I don't have the time( 2 kids & 2 jobs) I could do the service myself but it's much easier for me to drop the bike off and have it done a few hours later. Plus like Yatez said service records are your best friend. What happens if your out of town and break down? It's a lot easier knowing they can have your records in an instant, instead of you having to provide them and a possible warranty claim being denied. Just my 2 pennies
