Have you tried to run it throug it's codes yet? Before turning the key to "run" hold in the trip button on the speedometer then turn the key to run. Release the trip button while the key is still in the run position then each sucessive pressing of the trip button will show the error codes...

Smile Odometer's do not smell!

Wrong year for self-diagnostics so pressing the reset switch while turning on the ignition doesn't get you squat (if this is indeed a 2001 883XL we're talking about). It's hard to tell what exactly is going on; take your time typing up the question next time; if you're from outside the US and having trouble with English, my apologies! Anyhow, if she is turning the bike on and the trip meter resets itself: it is a bad switch (it's doing it's own reset to zero without her help) and can be replaced by removing the screw-on boot from the back side of the speedo, removing the socket head screws securing back of the speedo housing, then cutting the leads as close to the switch as you can. To install, you'll need to solder replacement switch to the leads, fix the squared bosses of the switch to the back of the housing plate, align and secure the plate with the screws, then replace rubber screw-on boot. You could even try unscrewing the boot and giving the switch a shot of WD-40; could be just sticking closed a bit! "When is is in ordormeter it stills show error": I'm not understanding this symptom. A 2001 will not display an "error" code. If the speedometer is measuring speed and distance on the odometer but will not let you click over to the trip meter or it is clicking itself from one to the other itself, both the speedometer and speed sensor on the transmission are fine; it's still the switch problem. If either the speedometer sensor or the speed sensor are NOT functioning, it will just not work, but will not display an "error" code.

Sorry, but your wrong Robzuc. A 2001 does have codes in the speedo....That's a '00 in my sig, and it does display codes in the speedo.

Eslish....Check the speedo for codes and go from there. There's a step by step write up on how to do it up in the DIY sticky.

Red face What the?

WVHogRider, you pissed me off enough to walk out and try my bike and... WTF? I have d01-05clr codes, plus PPU and part number. I imagine they are the scanalyzer codes (i.e.: 35, 16, 53, etc.) type; I thought (before) they only put this function on the '99 and up baggers). Never occured to me to try this on my '01 XL! Cool, I'll throw away my DVOM! LOL Service manual never mentions these either. Have to check out the ED manual tonight to research these some more-could come in handy. $18,000 paid education and they don't teach the scanalyzer at MMI (just the serial bus bikes/digital tech); have early model (like an evo? lol) next month so maybe I'll get it there!

Never doubt the power of the forum "arm chair mechanics"... There's lots of knowledge that can't always be found in books!

Instructors didn't know WTF? these either or it's a conspiracy not to teach the codes for some reason! We don't get taught the scanalyzer; just the serial bus type in HD course. No they ARE quite knowledgeable and all have prior dealership experience-no jokes please. Had to go into the Resource Center and read through ED manuals available for two models: '97 FL and '03 Softail. They are scanalyzer two-digit codings prior to the serial bus and, according to my brief read, can only be cleared with the scanalyzer or until fifty code free start-ups. The seven-"d" code listings do not correspond to a paticular component like the "p-s-sp-t" of the bus bikes but the codes correspond to a particular component fault, and was available as early as '97 (earliest ED I found). Funny thing is it isn't going into mode on my '97 FLSTC so I'm guessing it was "Touring models only" at that time unless accessing is way different from the ign sw+reset sw combonation. I'll have to go in on a Saturday when more time and read some more. And I'll also learn more in the Early Model section next month (can't wait to rip apart a panhead!). Thanks for the heads up; may be a good tool to use when the Sporty goes ta-up.
