Nope. Metrics and HD police models have a couple of "idiot" switches...With the bike in gear and sidestand down the bike will not start. With the bike in gear and sidestand UP the bike will not start without fully disengaging the clutch. With the bike in neutral and sidestand down the bike will start. Basically HD covers the potential issues for failing to properly follow starting procedures by stating it "can cause death or serious injury".
HD has no such "safety devices" on their civilian models.
But even if it did, the main purpose is the bike simply won't start. You having to start up the bike and THEN it dying is another issue altogether. Was it cold outside when you started it? Do you have a late model EFI? Mine sometimes balks in cold weather like that. But ONLY in cold weather and only ONCE if at all.

My '08 XL1200R doesn't have any juicy goodness like that, though.
