883/1200 conversion
Hi I am new here but I just wanted to say that I recently dyno tuned my xl 03 and this is my results. I started with Cycle Shack drag pipes. I ordered Screamin Eagle's own Hi-Flow air cleaner. I ordered the motor companys own 1200cc barrels and Screamin Eagle's own 883/1200 conversion piston set. This is a dished top forged piston design that is boasting a 10.0 to 1 compression ratio and is manufactured by Arias. I used Harley Davidson gaskets as well. The stock CV was retained and re-jetted to 45/175. I chose not to change cams because of reliability issues as well as stock Harley Davidson "D" cams are not bad with there 234 duration and .470 lift. Plus stock 883 heads do not flow enough to benifit in my opinion for a cam change to justify the money spent. But with that said Eric Buell did use these heads as a base for his heads because of its squish band and tight combustion chambers to tolerate the high compression and high heat generated. I do plan to use a Dyna 2000I ignition and single fire coil. Now with this said I achevied 64.3 horsepower @ 5,400 rpm and 69.1 ft/lb of torque @ 4,400 rpm after a carb re-jet of 45/180. The dyno tuner I used has been featured before in American Iron and is very knowledgible and claims A Dyna ignition after extensive tuning with this setup can realize 70 horsepower at the tire. So there you have it. I hope this benifits some of you with questions as to what will this do or that do. I can say the power is broad and there at any rpm. And remember 1200 Sportster Sports generate anywhere from 56 to 59 horsepower at the rear wheel in stock trim so think about it.

RE: 883/1200 conversion
Great info XL74,
I'm considering doing an upgrade on my '91 883 but am looking at different aspects as well as prices. I'm curious if there's anyone out there that's has just punched out their jugs and bought new pistons to accomodate it? I was also wondering about the rejetting of the carb but just looking in my maintenance manual my carb is already set up with a 45/175 configuration which seems odd as that's the same that the 1200 stock bike had installed that year. New slip on pipes would be a great idea, but everywhere I look I can't find any that say they'll fit a '91. If anyone has good info on this one, chime in and let me know. The other concern is what compression ratio to go with as stock on this year is 9.0:1 for the 883 as well as the 1200 and piston kits come in 9.0:1 9.5:1 or 10.:1 respectively. Not quite sure if the added compression will cause damage down the road with blown seals or head warpage. A jump up to the next grade of fuel would probably be needed as well on the higher compression engine as well. The last concern is the tranny as most 883's have a slightly different ratio than their 1200 brothers, basically running a higher rpm in fifth gear than their counterpart. The difference would actually equate to more throttle response in higher gears, but probably more fuel usage during the normal afternoon cruise on the highway as well.
Any info you guys can provide would be great.

the jug and piston combo are usually around 400-475 bucks, im pretty sure that the piston size is about .250 bigger on the 1200 thats a lot of passes through the stock 883 jug. you would probally have the same amount of money in machine work. i went with the screamin eagle kit which had jugs and forged pistons, wow what a difference
good luck!!
good luck!!

To be honest, you don't want a HD kit. You definitely do not want the SE heads. You can find kits from NHRS and Zippers. Or if you really want HD, get HD 1200 jugs and then buy the Thunderstorm Heads and Pistons. Add cams, pipes, and ignition and you'll have a great running bike. Back on topic though, do not use the SE heads.
