Default 1K mile service

Need help pretty bad, like its coming up for me to send it to the shop. The problem now is that their asking 285, and i cant really come up with it cuz im paying off classes. Especially now that they raised the price on books and classes as well so really is hurting the wallet. I went to the dealer and one of the techs told me if i can show proof that i buy the products required for the service then ill be fine with my warranty.
Im wondering i know i can save a lot more money if i do my own service. I want to know what is involved in the 1k mile sevice?
thanks

In addition to changing the oil and filter, the 1K involves checking all mechanical adjustments and re-torquing all critical fasteners. For that info. and to do the work you will need a Service Manual, and of course tools including an inch pounds and foot pounds torque wrenches.

Check your area for an HD certified independent mechanic. Mine charges $100.00 for the 1k service.

...or at the very least call around to your local Harley dealers. They're 1K Service prices VARY GREATLY.
If I had gone with conventional oil mine would have cost $160 at a HARLEY DEALER in NY.

Just make sure that who ever does the work really does it.Had the 1,000 mile service done by dealer to get around any warranty issues, got the bike home and they had the wrong oil level, battery cables not cleaned or dielectric greased, several bolts loose on exhaust and frame, got torque specs from manuel and torqued.Tire pressures checked next morning, wrong by five pounds, checked with two gagues to be sure.
