Backing off the adjusters an equal amount will take tension off the axel...a good thing. Just tighten an equal amount when you put it back together. Agree with Redbeard, the head of the axle is on the muffler side, so a muffler will have to come off to allow space to drive the axle out. Reinstall the other way.
