Home oil change question
This weekend I will probably give the sporty an oil change, tired of paying the dealer to do it. Plus it looks way easy, easier than my car.
I am going to pick up a filter wrench and a filter at the dealer, but I'd like to just get the motor oil at the auto parts store near my house.
I assume I don't need "genuine h-d oil" as the service manual says? I'd need to get something they'd carry on the selves at the auto store, like MobilOne, Valvoline, Pennzoil etc. I plan on using a full synthetic, makes sense?
Any recommendations?
Also, now that the next 5000 miles are likely to be in cooler weather I was thinking MobilOne 15w50... or should I look for a 10w50?

Well you may get 100 replys to this, I use Mobil 1 V Twin in the motor and primary and a K & N filter. You may want to search through the Oil related threads, it will make your head spin...
Regardless on your decision of oil make yourself something to slid under the oil filter so it doesn't drain all over the front of the engine, etc.

The regular Mobil-1 15w50 is an excellent choice and is used by many people here on the forum. You can get it at Walmart in a 5 quart jug for about $23.00. I would stay with the HD filter, they are good quality and made by Champion. While the K&N filters are popular, they are a 10 micron filter which is to fine for the Sportster oil pump, it causes the filter to go into bypass. Stick with the HD 30 micron filter, it's less expensive anyway.

I just changed mine last week... I used Mobil1 V-Twin from Advance Auto Parts and I bought the filter at HD Stealer. I used the socket style oil filter wrench from Advance Auto parts (worked great). I did not know about the pop bottle trick though, and had some cleaning up to do after taking off the filter.....
The oil cost me 38 bucks, the filter was around 8.
