Default Shifting Problem

My wife has an '04 883 Custom and she is having some shifting issues. She says that when she shifts into the higher gears, third and up, she has to hit the shifter twice to get it to shift. She says it does it after the bike has warmed up a bit. She will pull up on the shifter and she does not hear the gears change, when she hits it again they change. I changed the transmission fluid, but that did not solve the problem. Anyone have any suggestions?

When I did my forward control conversion, I read that if that this could happen and means the shift rod needs to be adjusted. I have no idea if this is the case for you, but just throwing it out there.

adjust shift rod, and also make sure the bolts on the inspection cover are good.. i have seen it where those bolts are too long and cause a grinding and cause hard shifting... why you ahve it apart adjust that clutch... Loosen the linkage on the down tube, back the bolt out on the clutch basket, loosen the set bolt, screw it back in till it seats and then 1/4 turn out, lock it down with the bolt... then tighten the clutch play on the linkage on the down tube so you have just a very little play in the lever...

Make sure she's letting the shifter fully return after each shift so that it resets itself. I've done it a few times (going up and down) and then spent the next few seconds telling myself hey move that foot just a bit more.

Did you ride it and have the same problems?

Sounds like it could be a case of lazy foot...

Is she new to the bike?... New forward controls?... Shift lever too high?...
