Default I need a little Sportster history

My girlfriend is asking about getting a bike for herself and so a used Sportster is on the top of the list. We will be budgeting a max of about $8000. I've been on E-Glides for the last 10 years, so I'm not well informed about the Sporty's. Anyway, I know they went to the rubber mount engine in 2004, but not much more beyond that. Can you all give me an education as to what other important changes have been made on the bikes since 2004. How long have they been fuel injected? Any years that have problems attached to them. Any models that you would recommend or stay away from.

She's 5'8" and pretty athletic, so she doesn't need a 'low'. Not certain if I'm comfortable putting her on a 1200 yet. I rode one a few years back and it was pretty damn quick. But I wouldn't rule one out if the bike and price was right.

I look forward to your opinions.

I have a 2005 XL1200C. Bought it used w/6,300 miles for $6,500 in May from private owner in PA. Great bike, no problems. See this link for history and changes by model year...

Fuel Injection came in 07. For her size I would recommend the 1200 Custom. Already has forward controls and the 1200 should not be too much to handle and will not leave more to be desired later on. I am sure you know this already but if she has not ridin before, send her to an MSF course.

Thanks, She just finished up the MSF course. I would like to get her on her own bike while all the learning is still fresh. Of course, the first accessory we'll purchase for the bike is an engine guard.
