Default That ham can of an air cleaner...

Hello Sporting people. I'm new to your Forum, and I'm new to Sportsters (more on that later) but I'm not new to biking--I've owned about a dozen bikes of various
makes since I began riding in high school over 40 years ago. I've been coveting Sportsters since the 1960s, so, as a retirement present my wife surprised me
with an '06 XL883 which sits in my shop awaiting the end of the west coast monsoon season. I am totally thrilled with this object of my heart's desire.
OK, OK, here's the thing:
I'm ready to pay the "Harley Tax" of low restriction AC and mufflers, but...

The size and shape of the "ham can" air cleaner bugs me. For starters it prevents me from hugging the tank with both legs during cornering, causes me to sit asymetrically,
and my knee is getting all bruised from hitting it. Also it hides too much of that beautiful V-twin engine!

I know HD makes the SE filter that bolts right in to the can, but is there another model that will work as well but have
a better shape/size? One that won't automatically void my factory warranty?
If so, who makes it, what's it called, and what's it cost?
I'm planning to add the SE slip-ons, and expect to re-jet the carb as well.
Thanks in advance for your helpful tips.

The force winder seems poular a popular alternative to leg banging

.

Not sure about the warranty though.

I've been drooling over that Kuryakin that looks like a v-twin engine but they want too much money for it so I am going to live with a high flow under my ham can until my ship comes in.[sm=bling.gif]

I have the Arlen Ness Big Sucker Stage I kit with a round K&N filter and like it very much. Click Here for a high resolution side view.

I like my S&S (pic in my sig below) - no knee clearance issues and I love the performance and old school look. I paid about $160.

Other ideas:

This one is cool, too...You can find details here:FXDX a/c on a Sporty

Rando man,

Welcome to the Forum and congratulations on retirement AND the XL883!!

Take a look at the S&S Teardrop - it's a classic!

Welcome to the Site. I'm in the minority here, I like the Ham Can with the added Ride to Live Insert.

I didn't like the Spam Can air box either, so I went with the S&S teardrop style, with a K&N filter.

This one provides an off-set option. Link

This one appears to have a lower profile and an old-school look. Link

I've got a Ness Big Sucker with a round cover on it. No problems at all hitting it with my knee.
