Default 1998 Sportster 1200 SE

What plugs should a 1998 1200 SE have in it. A guy sold me a set of Autolites today and in order to gap then to 40 thou I really had to open up the electrode. I'm not a believer that you should have to doo that with the right plugs. The gap should be close IMHO. Thoughs anyone? Thanks!
